Having a functional and serene outdoor living area will encourage you to spend more time outside, which is known to improve both mental and physical health.
People that tend to spend more time outside are more likely to be happier and healthier throughout their lives. Not to mention, when your home has a beautiful outdoor living area, your backyard easily becomes the ultimate summer staycation for you, your friends, and your family.
So what are you waiting for? Let’s design that irresistible space of your dreams in just 5 simple steps…
Step 1: Envision How You Want the Space to Feel
How would you feel if you could design or create your very own outdoor oasis? Wonderful, right?!
Well, now is the time to design your perfect outdoor living retreat so you can enjoy it for years to come with all the people that you love doing life with. Just imagine yourself sipping on your favorite beverage as time passes by. Now take a deep breath and take it all in.
Step 2: Treat the Area Just Like Your Indoor Living
If you honestly think about your outdoor living space, it really isn’t that much different from your indoor family room and dining area where you like to hang out.
All you have to do is dress it up a little by adding some of your favorite furnishings and accessories like a sofa, maybe a loveseat, some chairs, a few tables, pillows, planters, etc.
You could even create different outdoor zones and conversational areas depending on how much space you have in your backyard (just as you would inside the home).
Step 3: Choose Durable Furniture You Also Find Attractive
Outdoor furniture can get beat up pretty badly from the sun and extreme weather conditions, depending on where you live, so make sure you choose something that will last over time.
At The Savvy ID Home Staging & Design, we prefer using Teak Wood (White Oak, Cypress, Cedar, & Redwood) furniture because of its sustainability in our designs.
Now for home staging on the other hand, we tend to select outdoor furnishings based on the level of attractiveness instead of durability and how we want potential buyers to feel while experiencing the space.
Step 4: Layer Your Space with Performance Fabrics
When it comes to choosing a durable outdoor fabric, Sunbrella Fabric cushions (Polypropylene, Marine Vinyl, and Outdora) are some of our favorites to use because they’ve been treated for water, stain, and UV resistance and have high abrasion resistance as well.
Once you’ve decided on your wood and fabric selections, now you have to layer the space with beautiful outdoor rugs, pillows, lanterns, lighting, etc.
And if you have a fire pit or fireplace outside, add a few baskets and fill them with throws so you can enjoy them during the cold winter months.
Step 5: Add Your Bold and Beautiful Finishing Touches
Lastly, in order for you to create your irresistible outdoor oasis, make sure you add pops of color with fresh flowers by putting them in your favorite vases on the outdoor coffee table. You can even include a bar cart to store your favorite beverages.
Spend some time thinking about how you want to truly enjoy your outdoor living space before you start buying things. Find inspiration on Pinterest, Houzz, from magazines, on Instagram, Facebook, etc.
